NaPoWriMo Day 29 – Captions

Standard

You are not our readers
but you need
to know this.
We need more stories
we need different stories
a healthy and vital evolution.

If we can change perceptions
relate to and see each other
when we draw pictures,
sometimes teach others
the community it represents.
Keep our pencils moving
trying to be an ally.

You are not our readers.
The true faces, true fans
“I would not–
I didn’t just–
had no idea–“,
have become obscure
now in the minority.

You’ve probably met
the Pretty Deadly
voracious reader
you’ve probably met
people that
recognize that
conversations like this
have finally started to build
people that
reject fandom gatekeeping.

It does not matter
where we’re reading it from
that doesn’t matter much
to comics as a whole
to many who work
to stand in solidarity
make the world a better place.

You are not our readers
but we
we are comics.

NaPoWriMo Day 27 – Trails

Standard

vyacheslavmishchenko-23-934x You say that home is where the heart is
but we would disagree,
to an extent. We’ll get back to you on that.

You say all roads lead to Rome
eventually. We’ll see about that too,
just be patient, give us time.

You say that time flies or crawls,
but we prefer to see it slide
trying to keep pace with us.

You say pride goes before a fall,
then call us lazy and inefficient
but we’re actually pretty grounded.

So do your best to bring us down,
we’ll just keep on going. Slowly.

NaPoWriMo Day 26 – Just Sayin’

Standard

I have neglected
the poem
that was meant
for yesterday

and which
you were probably
expecting
to be better

than this
but it isn’t
so yeah
deal with it

I am actually fairly annoyed at myself for not getting one done on the 26th. Have a themed pun.

NaPoWriMo Day 25 – In Silence

Standard

I write words every day.
I don’t know where I’ll go
by writing.
I know I could stay silent.
Those who know, don’t speak.
Mute in the womb of time
where people even cry.
A look
will be enough to understand and say
what the voice cannot.
I touch every instant, every day
the cry and the thunder. I live around.
I could stop and wait.
In silence.

[Original Italian by Margherita Guidacci, ‘In silenzio’.]

NaPoWriMo Day 24 – Paris Sleeps

Standard

Paris sleeps. A giant silence
climbs down to occupy every crack
between tile and brick. Cats and birds
are quiet. I keep watch.

August without claxon. I survive
alone, maybe. I hold in my arms
like Sainte Geneviève my city
peeking out of the cape, in a corner of the painting.

[Original Italian by Maria Luisa Spaziani, ‘Parigi dorme’.]

NaPoWriMo Day 23 – Writing a Picture

Standard

Here I trace the first line
as straight as I can go,
a moat between grains and glass
separating what comes now,
what came then and what comes later.

Here I move inside the first contour
as light as I can go.
A face, hands immovable moving
timed reactions framed in
blank spaces, words will come later.

Here I draw the second scene
as quiet as I can go
the sequence scuttling along
fed by salt and sand and more.
Another scene will come later.

Here I stand back for a second
as the story before me
sits, crashing and roaring
washing into another page and another
after that. More will come later.

NaPoWriMo Day 22 – He sings

Standard

He sings. Or calls.
He is born knowing how to sing.
To sing and to fly. He knows to leap from the branch
with faith. He holds a force
and keeps it. A driving force.
He knows it.
He belongs to it.
He makes it. Flying
he makes the sky. Singing
he makes the voice of God
the bird-catcher. On the branch
God now twitches
testing the newborn Spring
to the vault of
the flower. He prays.
He does it with colour.
He does it with light.

NaPoWriMo Day 21 – Twisted Idioms (II)

Standard

He lived in this ugly old slum
and uglier than him there were none.
With his black carapace
and his pincer-filled face –
though he was dearly loved by his mum.

Another twisted idiom from Italian, this time the Neapolitan ‘Ogni scarrafon’è (b)bello a mammà soja’, literally translated as ‘Even a cockroach is beautiful to its mum’. Not too far from ‘Face only a mother could love’, really.

NaPoWriMo Day 20 – Hop to It

Standard

Yes I know I should’ve been writing
but yesterday was way too eggciting!
We were tracking a rabbit
and he just wouldn’t have it:
he would not give ’em up without fighting.

Late poem in the aftermath of chocolate day. Vaguely inspired by this guy.
