NaPoWriMo 2015 Day 16 – April suburb

Standard

Flowerbeds around
where you chased footballs:
and now in the rubble
soiled flowers bloom to the dry breath
of springtime walls.
But in your eyes and in your voice
there is water,
coolness in your depths, rooted
beyond clods and seasons, in what
remains on the tops
damp snow:
and so you rush through every vein
and tell
that remote road still
and the wind
light over gigantic
blue chasms.

[Original Italian by Antonia Pozzi (1912-1938), ‘Periferia in aprile’.]

NaPoWriMo 2015 Day 2 – I was born on the twentyfirst in Spring

Standard

I was born on the twentyfirst in Spring
but did not know that being born a fool,
unearthing the soil
could sow storms.
And so fair Proserpina
watches it rain on fields,
on the giant gentle wheats
and always cries at night.
Maybe that’s her prayer.

[Original Italian by Alda Merini, ‘Sono nata il 21 a primavera’]

NaPoWriMo Day 22 – He sings

Standard

He sings. Or calls.
He is born knowing how to sing.
To sing and to fly. He knows to leap from the branch
with faith. He holds a force
and keeps it. A driving force.
He knows it.
He belongs to it.
He makes it. Flying
he makes the sky. Singing
he makes the voice of God
the bird-catcher. On the branch
God now twitches
testing the newborn Spring
to the vault of
the flower. He prays.
He does it with colour.
He does it with light.
